Planning a Smile Makeover Around a Date: Timelines for Los Altos Weddings and Milestones

Weddings are the most common reason patients from Los Altos come to us with a deadline attached to their smile, though anniversaries, graduations and milestone birthdays run a close second. A fixed date changes how a makeover should be planned. It is not only a question of which treatments you would like, but which of them can be completed comfortably, in the right order, with time left over before the day. This article sets out how we build a plan backwards from a date.

Begin with the runway you have

As a broad guide:

• Nine to twelve months: enough for a full makeover that includes straightening teeth, whitening and then veneers or bonding.
• Three to four months: comfortable for a moderate plan of whitening, reshaping and one or two areas of bonding.
• Four to six weeks: a lighter refresh of professional whitening and a cleaning.

Whatever the scope, we build in a buffer of two to three weeks at the end, so no dental work is being finished in the same week as a final dress fitting or a rehearsal dinner.

Why the order matters

A makeover has a logical sequence, because each step changes what the next step needs to achieve.

1. Move teeth first. Aligners reposition teeth, and moving a tooth that already carries a veneer or crown can compromise the restoration. Straightening first can also mean less tooth needs to be prepared later.
2. Whiten second. Whitening lightens natural enamel but not porcelain, ceramic or composite. Setting the shade before restorations are made means they can be matched to it.
3. Restore last. Veneers, crowns and bonding are made to the brighter shade and the corrected positions.

Reversing that order tends to leave you with restorations that match your older, darker colour, or with work that has to be redone.

How long each piece takes

Clear aligners

Mild crowding, small gaps or a single rotated tooth often resolves in six to twelve months. An average adult case runs about a year, and many include a short refinement phase that adds one to three months. Retainers begin as soon as the last aligner is finished, worn full-time for several weeks and then at night. Whitening

In-office whitening makes a noticeable difference in one appointment; take-home trays usually take two to three weeks. Afterwards, allow 7 to 14 days for the shade to stabilise and any sensitivity to settle. Most people feel sensitivity for one to three days, occasionally up to a week. We aim to finish whitening at least two to three weeks before the date, and earlier when restorations need to be matched to it.

Veneers and crowns

Porcelain involves a preparation visit, around two to three weeks of laboratory time, and a bonding visit, plus room for adjustments. Allowing six to eight weeks for a small case and eight to twelve for a more comprehensive design gives everyone time to get it right. Our veneer guide describes each stage.

Bonding

Composite bonding is often completed in a single visit, but should still follow whitening so the resin can be matched to your final shade.

The final polish

A routine cleaning two to four weeks before the date lifts fresh surface stain and leaves the gums looking their healthiest. In the last two weeks, we avoid anything more involved unless something urgent comes up.

Three sample plans

Twelve months out. Consultation, digital design and a trial mock-up in month one. Aligners from month two to around month ten, including refinements. Whitening once the aligners are complete. Veneer preparation shortly after the shade settles, bonding about a month later. A cleaning a few weeks before the date.

Four months out. Consultation and design in the first fortnight. Whitening with trays over the following weeks. Once the shade has stabilised, bonding or reshaping to refine a chipped edge or a small gap. A cleaning and polish closer to the date, leaving a clear buffer at the end.

Six weeks out. An examination and cleaning, followed promptly by whitening. Anything more involved is planned for after the event, without the pressure of a deadline.

Choosing the right scope

Many people arrive certain they need veneers when whitening and a small amount of bonding would give them the smile they have in mind. Others have a bite issue that aligners would correct more durably than covering it with porcelain. Questions about planning to a date

I am four months away and have only just decided. Is that too late?

Not necessarily. Whitening, reshaping, bonding and a cleaning all fit comfortably. Full aligner or large veneer cases usually need more time, but a tailored plan can still make a real difference in time for photographs.

Should I whiten before or after veneers?

Before. Let the shade stabilise for one to two weeks, then match the porcelain to it.

Could whitening sensitivity show up on the day?

Finishing whitening two to three weeks beforehand gives a comfortable margin, since sensitivity usually settles within a few days.

My partner would like treatment too. Can we coordinate?

Two people on overlapping plans is straightforward with an early start, and we try to align appointments to reduce trips.
