Whitening Before a Big Occasion: A Countdown for Los Altos Hills Patients

Whitening Before a Big Occasion: A Countdown for Los Altos Hills Patients

· Eclat Dental Studio

Planning whitening around a celebration or photographs: when to start, why to finish early, how to handle crowns and veneers that will not change colour, and touch-ups.

A milestone birthday, a daughter's wedding, a portrait session, a speech in front of a full room: occasions like these are often what prompt patients from Los Altos Hills to think about whitening. The treatment itself is simple. The part that deserves care is the timing, because whitening that finishes too close to the day can leave you with tender teeth or a shade that has not quite settled, and existing dental work can end up looking out of step with newly brightened teeth. This is a practical countdown to help you avoid both.

Start by counting backwards

Put the date on the calendar and work back from it. As a general guide, aim to have all whitening finished at least two to three weeks before the event. That leaves room for any sensitivity to calm down, for the colour to stabilise, and for a final polish. If existing crowns, veneers or fillings may need attention, allow considerably more time, as explained below.

A sample countdown

Eight weeks or more before

  • Book an examination. We check for decay, gum recession and cracks, any of which can make whitening uncomfortable, and look at your front teeth for restorations.
  • Decide on a method. In-office whitening delivers a visible change in one visit. Custom take-home trays reach a similar result over roughly two to three weeks of daily wear.
  • If your teeth run sensitive, begin brushing with a potassium nitrate toothpaste now.

Six to four weeks before

  • Whiten. With trays, this is when the daily sessions happen. With an in-office visit, this is a comfortable window for the appointment.
  • Expect any sensitivity to last roughly 24 to 72 hours, occasionally up to a week for very sensitive teeth.

Four to two weeks before

  • Let the shade settle. We suggest allowing 7 to 14 days after your final whitening session before judging the result or matching any new restoration to it.
  • Have a routine cleaning and polish in this window to lift fresh surface stain and leave the gums looking healthy.

The final fortnight

  • Avoid starting anything new or invasive unless something urgent arises.
  • Rinse with water after coffee, tea or red wine, and use your trays for a brief top-up if the shade has drifted.

Crowns, veneers and fillings will not whiten

This is the point that surprises people most. Whitening gel lightens natural tooth structure only. Porcelain crowns, veneers and tooth-coloured composite fillings keep exactly the shade they had when they were made. If one of them sits among your front teeth, whitening the teeth around it can make it look darker by comparison.

There are three common ways to handle this:

  1. Whiten to a matching shade. If the restoration is already fairly light, we may aim to bring your natural teeth up to it rather than beyond it.
  2. Whiten, then replace. If you want to go brighter, we whiten first, wait for the colour to stabilise, and then replace the crown, veneer or filling to match the new shade. Porcelain work involves laboratory time, so this route needs the longest runway, often several extra weeks.
  3. Refresh composite only. Small tooth-coloured fillings or bonding can often be replaced or resurfaced in a single visit once your shade is final.

Whichever applies, the order is always the same: whiten first, restore second. Doing it the other way round locks new porcelain to your old, darker colour. Our porcelain veneers guide explains the laboratory steps if a replacement is needed.

If the date is close

With only a few weeks to go, in-office whitening is usually the more practical choice, provided your teeth are not especially sensitive and there is still at least a week or two before the event. With less time than that, a professional cleaning and polish on its own can make a visible difference, and whitening can follow afterwards without the pressure of a deadline.

Touch-ups after the event

Whitening is not permanent. Coffee, tea, red wine, dark sauces and tobacco gradually bring colour back. Many patients keep a noticeable result for months to a couple of years, and a few short tray sessions every few weeks or months keep the shade steady. Custom trays can be reused as long as they fit well, so keeping yours makes future occasions much simpler to prepare for.

Questions about event timing

Can I whiten the week of the event?

We advise against it. Sensitivity is most likely in the first couple of days, and the shade continues to settle for up to two weeks.

Will my veneers look mismatched?

They may if your natural teeth become noticeably lighter. We look at this at the first visit and plan the target shade with your existing restorations in mind.

Do booster lights make in-office whitening quicker?

A recent review found that added lights or lasers generally did not improve the final result meaningfully, so they are not something you need.

Is whitening covered by dental insurance?

Usually not, since it is considered cosmetic. We provide a written estimate before treatment starts.
