Porcelain Veneers in Mountain View: What Happens at Each Appointment

When people consider porcelain veneers, the questions that come up are often practical ones. How many appointments will it take? Will I be numb? Will I be walking around with ground-down teeth? What do I do between visits? This article answers those questions by walking through a typical veneer case at our Mountain View studio one appointment at a time. Every smile is different, so your own plan may combine or add visits, but the overall shape is usually close to what follows.

Before the first visit

It helps to arrive with a sense of what you would like to change and what you would like to keep. Some patients bring photographs of their own smile from years ago, or images of smiles they admire. None of this is required, but it gives the conversation a starting point. If you have had dental work on your front teeth in the past, any records you have are useful too.

Appointment one: consultation and records

What we do. We examine your teeth, gums and bite, take X-rays where needed, and capture a set of photographs and a digital scan. Much of the time is conversation: what bothers you, how you would like your smile to look, and how much change feels right.

What we are checking. Veneers need healthy gums, sound teeth without active decay, and enough enamel to bond to. We also look for clenching or grinding and for bite problems, since those need to be managed before porcelain goes on. Sometimes this visit shows that bonding, Invisalign or whitening would serve you better, or would be a sensible first step.

How it feels. Nothing is altered and no numbing is needed.

Afterwards. You receive a written plan and estimate. If you want to whiten your other teeth, this is the moment to do it, because porcelain is matched to your natural shade and will not change colour later.

Appointment two: design review and trial smile

What we do. Using your photographs and scan, we plan the length, width, shape and shade of each veneer. A tooth-coloured mock-up of that design is then placed over your existing teeth, with no drilling, so you can see it in a mirror, smile, talk and judge it in your own face. What we are checking. Proportions, the edge line against your lower lip, how the teeth look when you speak, and whether you would like anything softer, longer or shorter. The mock-up also shows us how little tooth we can remove while still achieving the design.

How it feels. Comfortable. The material simply rests on the teeth and is removed before you leave, or kept on briefly if we have agreed a short trial.

Afterwards. We adjust the design until you are happy. Nothing moves forward until you approve it.

Appointment three: preparation, scan and provisionals

What we do. After numbing the area, we reshape the front surface of each tooth guided by the approved design, removing a thin layer of enamel. The aim is to stay within enamel wherever possible, because porcelain bonds far more dependably to enamel than to the dentin beneath. We then take a precise digital scan and record the final shade before placing provisional veneers.

How it feels. Similar to having a filling: pressure and vibration, but no pain once you are numb. Allow a longer appointment than the first two.

Afterwards. The provisionals protect the prepared teeth and let you try the new shape in everyday life. They are held more lightly than the final porcelain, so avoid very hard or sticky foods, brush and floss gently, and tell us if anything about the shape or your speech feels wrong. Mild sensitivity to cold is common for a few days.

Between visits: the laboratory

Your scan, photographs and approved design go to a ceramist, who builds each veneer to match your shade and the character of your neighbouring teeth. This typically takes around two to three weeks. There is nothing for you to do except wear the provisionals and note any changes you would like.

Appointment four: try-in and bonding

What we do. The provisionals come off and the teeth are cleaned. Each veneer is first tried in with a removable paste so you can see the fit and colour in place before anything is permanent. Once you are happy, we isolate the teeth to keep them dry, prepare the enamel, and bond each veneer with a light-cured resin cement. Excess cement is removed and the edges are polished.

How it feels. Usually quite relaxed. Local anaesthetic is often used for comfort, and the longest part is the careful isolation and bonding.

Afterwards. Your bite may feel slightly different for a day or two while you get used to the new edges. Normal eating can resume once any numbness wears off.

Appointment five: review

About one to two weeks later we check how the gums have settled around the veneers, look at your bite, and make small refinements if anything feels high or rough. If you clench or grind, we take records for a custom night guard at this stage, since protecting the porcelain at night is one of the most effective ways to make it last.

How long the whole process takes

From the first consultation to the review visit, most cases take around three to five weeks. Larger cases, or those that need gum treatment, whitening or tooth movement first, take longer. The design and trial smile can sometimes happen at the consultation itself, which shortens the timeline by one appointment.

Questions about the appointments

Will I have to go without teeth at any point?

Never. You leave the preparation visit wearing provisionals and keep them until the final veneers are bonded.

Can I take time off work for just one day?

Most people return to work straight after each visit. The preparation and bonding appointments are the longest, so an afternoon slot can be convenient.

What if I dislike the final veneers at try-in?

That is exactly why the try-in exists. If the shade or shape is not right, we can send them back to the ceramist before anything is bonded.

Are veneers covered by insurance?

Most PPO plans treat veneers as cosmetic. Any foundational care, such as fillings or gum treatment, may be covered, and we are in-network with all major PPO plans.
